Amber Kinetics was recently featured on Undecided with Matt Ferrell, a YouTube channel covering innovative sustainable technologies and their applications.
In the video, Ferrell dives into the blackouts that affected the Iberian Peninsula in 2025, which had severe economic impacts and multiple indirect deaths, as “emergency services, transportation, communication, and other vital services were halted during this power outage.”
The blackouts were attributed in part to increased reliance on renewable energy. “Renewables are great,” Ferrell notes, “but they are prone to short-term voltage fluctuations based on the weather, demand spikes, and other stressors…As Professor Keith Pullen of City St George’s, University of London points out, these sorts of blackouts are likely to become more common as grids incorporate more renewables and demand becomes spikier and less predictable.”
The solution that Ferrell highlights is flywheel energy storage. “Amber Kinetics has the most exciting news,” Ferrell notes, referencing the company’s partnership with Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The partnership provides a joint solution of Amber Kinetics flywheels and KHI’s Virtual Synchronous Generator Technology (iVSG), designed specifically to address grid instability and frequency fluctuations.
